ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Evolution of the dust mass loss with luminosity along the giant branch of the globular cluster 47 Tuc Abstract. The present paper investigates the properties of the dust mass loss in stars populating the giant branch of the globular cluster 47 Tuc, by combining ISOCAM and DENIS data. Raster maps of 5 fields covering areas ranging from 4 × 4 to 15 × 15 arcmin 2 at different distances from the center of the cluster have been obtained with ISOCAM at 11.5 µm (LW10 filter). The covered fields include most of the red variables known in this cluster. A detection threshold of about 0.2 mJy is achieved, allowing to detect giant stars at 11.5 µm all the way down to the horizontal branch. No dust-enshrouded asymptotic giant branch stars have been found in the observed fields, contrary to the situation encountered in LMC/SMC globular clusters with larger turnoff masses. The color index [12] − [2] (based on the ISO 11.5 µm flux and on the DENIS K s magnitude) is used as a diagnostic of dust emission (and hence dust mass loss). Its evolution with luminosity along the giant branch reveals that dust mass loss is only present in V3 (the only cluster Mira variable observed in the present study) and in V18, a star presenting intermittent variability. This conclusion confirms the importance of stellar pulsations in the dust formation and ensuing mass loss. post-AGB – circumstellar matter – Stars: mass loss – In-frared: stars

Mass Outflow and Chromospheric Activity of Red Giant Stars in Globular Clusters

High resolution spectra of 110 selected red giant stars in the globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078) were obtained with Hectochelle at the MMT telescope in 2005 May, 2006 May, and 2006 October. Echelle orders containing Hα and Ca II H & K are used to identify emission and line asymmetries characterizing motions in the extended atmospheres. Emission in Hα is detected to a luminosity of log(L/L⊙) = 2.3...

The First Empirical Mass Loss Law for Population II Giants

Using the Spitzer IRAC camera we have obtained mid-IR photometry of the red giant branch stars in the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tuc. About 100 stars show an excess of mid-infrared light above that expected from their photospheric emission. This is plausibly due to dust formation in mass flowing from these stars. This mass loss extends down to the level of the horizontal branch and increases ...

Blue horizontal branch stars in metal - rich globular clusters . II . 47 Tuc and NGC 362

Atmospheric parameters (Teff , log g), and radial velocities are derived for twelve candidate blue horizontal branch (HB) stars in the globular clusters 47 Tuc and NGC 362, which so far have been known to contain primarily red HB stars. The spectroscopic targets were selected from the catalog of hot stars detected in these clusters at 1600 Å using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT). Spectr...

Mixing processes during the evolution of red giants with moderate metal deficiencies: the role of molecular-weight barriers

We have assembled accurate abundance data for Li, C, and N as well as the 12C/13C ratio for five field giants with [Fe/H]' −0.6 including Arcturus and two stars in the globular cluster 47 Tuc. Using their very precise Mbol values obtained from HIPPARCOS parallaxes, we can place them into an evolutionary sequence. The sequence shows that the 12C/13C ratios drops from ∼ 20 to near 7 between Mbol ...

We present new photometry for the Galactic thick disk globular cluster Palomar 11 extending well past the main sequence turn-off in the V and I bands. This photometry shows noticeable, but depleted red giant and subgiant branches. The difference in magnitude between the red horizontal branch (red clump) and the subgiant branch is used to determine that Palomar 11 has an age of 10.4 ± 0.5 Gyr. T...
